For JBLM, thanks from movie stars and a cinematic treat

Joint Base Lewis-McChord went Hollywood on Wednesday night as the base hosted a premiere of “Iron Man 3.”

More than 900 service members and guests got to see the movie for free more than week before it opens in theaters through a marketing push involving the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, Marvel Comics and Skype.

Spring Fair honors Military Appreciation Day April 19

The Spring Fair in Puyallup is approaching, and fair organizers want to show appreciation for the men and women in uniform.

Military Appreciation Day at the fair is Friday, April 19, and anyone in the military community can get free gate admission with a valid military ID.

All active, reserve, and retired military and National Guard and their dependents, plus disabled veterans can take advantage of the free admission, according to a release from public relations counsel Karen LaFlamme.

JBLM/Saint Martin’s grads celebrate Friday in Lakewood

Members of Saint Martin’s University’s Extended Learning Division will gather Friday, Feb. 1 to celebrate the graduation of 29 members of its Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) December class of 2012.

 

The graduation ceremony, which begins at 1 p.m., takes place at the Clover Park Technical College McGavick Conference Center located at 4500 Steilacoom Blvd SW, Lakewood. The event will include remarks by University President Roy F. Heynderickx.

Prepare for delays, disruptions at JBLM on Wednesday

Joint Base Lewis-McChord will hold a major internal security exercise Wednesday, Dec. 12.

The goal of the exercise is to ensure base leadership and first responders are prepared to respond to a variety of security threats and able to protect personnel, resources, and property.

During the exercise people working, conducting business, or visiting JBLM should anticipate detours in vehicle traffic patterns, restricted access to some buildings and possible disruption to various customer service activities.

JBLM officials and exercise planners have developed the exercise scenario to ensure response actions do not impede traffic along Interstate 5.

More booming times at Camp Murray this weekend

The Washington Army National Guard is alerting neighbors about the firing of cannon salutes on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13 and 14, on the north end of Camp Murray.

The first salute is for a change-of-command ceremony for the 81st Armored Brigade Combat Team scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday. Col. Christopher Fowler will transfer command to Col. Michael Weitzel.

Sunday’s salute will accompany the retirement ceremony for Master Sgt. Joel Cournyer, who served the Guard and active-duty Army for more than 30 years. The retirement ceremony is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.

Clover Park schools grant to help military kids

Students at 13 schools in Lakewood’s Clover Park School District will benefit from a $2.48 million grant from the Department of Defense. Grant funds will be used in two ways: to boost student achievement in science and math using technology and engineering, and to teach kids about community, personal responsibility and well-being.

Schools receiving grant money are:

• Beachwood, Carter Lake, Clarkmoor, Evergreen, Greenwood and Hillside elementary schools, all located on Joint Base Lewis-McChord
• Custer, Dower, Idlewild, Lake Louise, Oakbrook and Park Lodge elementary schools
• Harrison Preparatory School

Civilian hall of fame at JBLM inducts 2 new members

Joint Base Lewis-McChord welcomed two new inductees into its civilian hall of fame Wednesday.

Former DuPont mayor Tamara Jenkins and Ken Swarner, co-publisher and editor of the Fort Lewis Ranger, were recognized during a ceremony earlier today.

Under Jenkin’s leadership, DuPont created a memorial wall to honor fallen service members who lived in the south Pierce County city  — three names will be added on Memorial Day — and in 2010 organized a combined Fourth of July and pro-troop parade.

Puyallup police offer tips, training at JBLM

The Puyallup Police Department sent two of its top officers to Joint Base Lewis-McChord this week to work with military police who are deploying to Afghanistan.

Puyallup’s deputy chief, Bryan Jeter, and Capt. Scott Engle worked with members of the 42nd Military Police Brigade, according to information from the city.

They were asked to provide tips on applying police training to real situations, the city said.

The city of 37,000 people in eastern Pierce County works with the base as a community connector, providing support to the 2nd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division.
