Closure on recreational shellfish harvesting in Pierce County

Two Pierce County beaches have been closed after unsafe levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poison were found in shellfish samples.

Shellfish harvesting is temporarily restricted at Day Island, Point Defiance, Wollochet Bay and Hale Passage, according to Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.

A stretch of shoreline from Gig Harbor to the Kitsap County Line also remains closed.

Advisory signs will be posted at Dash Point County Park, Brown’s Point Park, Owens Beach, Point Defiance boathouse, Narrows Park, Day Island marina, Wollochet Bay boat launch and Fox Island Bridge.

West Point’s top grad (a local) to throw first pitch at M’s game Tuesday

JANET JENSEN/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER – Second Lt. Elizabeth Betterbed of Fox Island runs earlier this month in Point Defiance Park in Tacoma. After graduating at the top of her class from West Point a few weeks ago and before moving to England to study as a Rhodes scholar, Betterbed is taking a couple of weeks off at home. She’ll throw out the first pitch at the Seattle Mariners game Tuesday.

Just got an update from Tom Betterbed. We wrote a story about his daughter, Elizabeth, who graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with the top score this year.

Work (and headaches) to begin near Fox Island bridge

Note: The county says it initially issued the incorrect days work will take place. Construction is scheduled 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Pierce County will begin work on some major road projects near the Fox Island bridge next week.

The county says drivers should expect delays of up to 20 minutes.

“Weather permitting, Warren Drive will be closed between 27th Street Court Northwest and 70th Avenue Northwest starting (Monday) May 11,” according to the county’s press release. “It is scheduled to partially reopen June 8. The intersection of 32nd Street NW and 70th Avenue NW will also be completely closed over one weekend during this four-week period. A detour route will be marked.”

Work hours are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Voting on Fox Island

I swung by the polling place at Fox Island. It had, by far, the best ambiance of any station I went to today. It was in a church and had Gregorian chant playing in the background. Can’t argue with that.
