Low tides could affect Pierce Count ferry runs for large vehicles

Pierce County ferry riders in large vehicles should plan ahead for low tides from Tuesday through July 11.

Load restrictions will be in place on some ferry runs, and riders may be asked to wait until a later sailing.

The restrictions affect large vehicles, such as RV’s, commercial trucks or a vehicle towing a trailer, according to the Pierce County Ferry System.

It provides service between the Town of Steilacoom, Anderson Island and Ketron Island.

Ticket agents and ferry crews will be checking large vehicles and those towing trailers for sailings affected by low tides.

Restrictions could be put in place at various times from Wednesday to May 29.

Peak-season changes for Pierce County ferries to start Wednesday

The peak-season schedule and fares for Pierce County ferries will go into effect Wednesday.

A variety of fares will increase. And there will be several schedule changes. The county’s ferry system operates service between the Town of Steilacoom, Anderson Island and Ketron Island.

County Council committee postpones action on moving council meetings to a later start time

A Pierce County Council committee today delayed action on moving the full council’s meetings to a later starting time so more members of the public could attend.

The panel weighed increased access versus added costs of moving Tuesday’s council meetings from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Increased costs would include security screening at one entrance to the County-City Building and a Sheriff’s deputy for the meeting and building. Council budget analyst Paul Bocchi estimated the added costs at $13,300 a year.

Council member Connie Ladenburg, D-Tacoma, proposed moving the council meetings to 5 p.m.

Steilacoom School District alters board meeting schedule

The Steilacoom Historical School District Board voted to revise its meeting schedule for the months of February, March and April 2013. The action was taken at the board’s Jan. 9 meeting in response to a recent Pierce County Ferry schedule change.

The ferry added a later Thursday evening run to Anderson Island during the non-peak season. This change will allow  Anderson Island residents – who are part of the Steilacoom district – the opportunity to attend one school board meeting a month and be able to return home that evening.

A number of changes to Pierce County’s ferry schedule will take effect Jan. 1 for service between Steilacoom and Ketron Island and Anderson Island.

A variety of changes to the Pierce County Ferry sailing schedule will go into effect Jan. 1, 2013.

A total of seven service changes were made using input from the community. The changes include new runs, shifted run times, canceled runs, and changes to Ketron Island service.

County mulling ferry schedule changes

Pierce County is soliciting public feedback as it mulls whether to adjust next year the schedule of its ferry service between Steilacoom and Anderson and Ketron islands.

A final community meeting is scheduled at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at the Anderson Island Community Clubhouse, 11319 Yoman Road. Residents who can’t attend can submit written comments here

County staff as well as the Pierce County Ferry Committee — made up of volunteers from the town and islands — developed the options for schedule changes.

Meeting to discuss proposed changes to Steilacoom ferry

Pierce County will hold a meeting Thursday, June 14, in Steilacoom so residents  can learn more about proposed changes for the ferry.

Among the improvements, the county wants to add a ticket booth between loading lanes. It also wants to provide more room for waiting vehicles by temporarily closing Lafayette Street west of Union Avenue, adding about 12 more spaces, said Deb Wallace, the county’s airport and ferry manager.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in Steilacoom Town Hall, 1717 Lafayette St.

The proposed changes will be discussed on Anderson Island at the community’s advisory board meeting at 7 p.m.
