The staircase between Dock Street and downtown Tacoma that’s part of the Murray Morgan Bridge renovation at South 11th Street opened to the public Friday.

The elevator should open by the end of next week, pending inspection by the state, project manager Tom Rutherford said.

Crews hoped to have both finished in March, but had to change the access to the machinery room on top of the elevator, including the size of the door, to meet state requirements, he said.

“We were trying to provide access by a ladder and (the state Department of Labor & Industries) didn’t allow that,” he said. “The stairs go up an additional flight and sort of wrap around the elevator. We had to provide that.”

Old stairs on the side of the bridge were demolished in 2011 as part of the renovation, he said.

Without the steps, the nearest route to downtown Tacoma is via South 15th Street.

Let us hope our new $20 Tacoma vehicle road tax is used only for our past forgot about residential ‘Taxpayers’ road and streets and no money is siphoned from our residential road fixing to maintain any bridge elevator or this bridge!

Maintaining the Restored Murry Morgan Bridge should now be the financial responsibility of City of Tacoma General Government; it follows, not from any ‘Citizens’ road taxes or fees paid. City of Tacoma you wanted this bridge; as a result, City of Tacoma General Government—your got it—take care of this bridge and it stairs and its elevator from your own City of Tacoma General Government general funds only. And before I forget: Do not us any Municipal Public Utilities resources or utility people for your new required bridge operations and required repairs. We ‘Ratepayers’ don’t like funding other General Government responsibilities and get a City of Tacoma tax added on top of our ‘Ratepayers’ billings!

I don’t seem to remember the elevator existing on the historic Eleventh Street Bridge [Murray Morgan Bridge] but maybe I am not old enough to only remember: bridge, stairs, cliff avenue access from dock street: But no elevator in this bridges history, that I can remember.
