Lakewood selects six city manager finalists

The Lakewood City Council picked Monday night the six finalists that will vie to become the next city manager for Pierce County’s second-largest city.

Its list mirrored one the one recommended by consultant Greg Prothman that was released on Friday.

Council members said all the finalists are excellent candidates and well qualified to move to in-person interviews on June 17 and 18. The vote was 6-0; Mayor Don Anderson was traveling out of state.

Only Councilman Michael Brandstetter favored whittling the list to four finalists.

The finalists are: James Bourney, former city manager of Greenville, S.C.; John Caulfield, city manager for Mountlake Terrace; Matthew Fulton, former city manager in Coon Rapids, Minn.; W. Scott Larese, former garrison commander of Fort Rucker, Ala.; Michael Martin, city manager for Burien; and Deputy Pierce County Executive Kevin Phelps.

“We have quite an excellent group of people here,” Councilwoman Marie Barth said. “I don’t think I would like to cull anybody at this point.”

Both council members Helen McGovern and Mary Moss lamented that the job didn’t attract more qualified women and minorities but said that didn’t take away from the quality of the finalist pool.

“I am very pleased with what we have,” Moss said. “I have no qualms with what we have as far as going forward.”

The Pierce County Fix (aka.McCarthy/Ladenberg) is in – the extremely unqualified, and dislisked Phelps will be in!
