Meet the newest addition to the harbor seal family at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

The 23-pound pup, who has yet to be named, was born Sunday to eight-year-old Shila, whose maternal instincts are in full swing as she cares for the newborn.

“She’s a great mom,” general curator Karen Goodrowe Beck said.

Mother and pup will bond behind the scenes for a couple weeks before they join the other harbor seals on exhibit, though the zoo said it’s too soon to say exactly when the public will be able to see the little guy. He has to nurse and build up a layer of blubber before his public debut, the zoo said.

Before long, he should have a friend in the exhibit.

Harbor seal Qilak, 9, is also expecting a pup at the zoo. She could deliver any day.

14-year-old Q fathered both pups. He was on breeding loan from the Seattle Aquarium for about 14 months, and returned there two weeks ago.

The new pup joins four other harbor seals at the zoo: 37-year-old Blackie, 36-year-old Louise, Shila and Qilak.
