Eatonville mayor not running for re-election, files to run for Town Council Position 2

Eatonville Mayor Ray Harper filed Tuesday night to run for a Town Council spot, forgoing another term as mayor.

Harper has filed to run for Position 2, according to the Pierce County elections website.

Three candidates have filed to run for mayor, including Town Councilman Gordon Bowman.

Harper has struggled with budget problems in his tenure.

Last year in April, he experienced backlash from residents when he proposed disbanding the Eatonville Police Department and contracting with Pierce County Sheriff’s Department for services. The council unanimously voted against the cost-saving proposal.

Also in April 2012, a state audit found the city spent donations meant for a trail project on general operating expenses in 2010. The city has said it plans to repay the funds, a total of about $164,000.
