Town Councilman Gordon Bowman is one of three candidates so far who have filed to run for mayor of Eatonville, according to the Pierce County elections website.

In addition to Bowman, Carl (Bud) Lucas and Mike Schaub have filed to run.

Filing week ends Friday, May 17. Candidates can file or online or in-person with the Pierce County Auditor’s Office. The primary election is Aug. 6. The general election is Nov. 5.

Incumbent Mayor Ray Harper has yet to file to run for re-election.

Eatonville, a town with a population of about 2,700, has experienced budget problems in recent years. The town has been running a deficit, following declines in revenue after the recession and expansion of the town’s Fire Department a few years ago.

Last year, Harper proposed disbanding the town’s police department as a cost-saving measure. He suggested hiring the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department to provide law enforcement services in the Mount Rainier foothills community.

The council unanimously rejected the plan in April 2012.

Also in April last year, a state audit found the town used about $164,000 in donations meant for a trail project to cover general operating expenses in 2010. Town officials have said they have a plan to pay back the donations.
