Voters in Bonney Lake have received mail-in ballots for a special election determining whether the city will create a Bonney Lake park district, according to a city newsletter.
If approved in the April 23 election, the Bonney Lake Metropolitan Park District would create a supplemental tax and operate as a distinct taxing authority for the “management, control, improvement, maintenance, and acquisition of parks, parkways, boulevards, and recreational facilities,” according to the release.
The Bonney Lake City Council would serve as the ex officio Park District board, according to the release, assessing the needs and park functions that the district would need to address.
Initial projects could include new ball fields and trails and would likely address other needs over time, including a community recreation center.
The park district, if approved, would have the authority to levy a property tax. Statutory tax limits would likely limit the maximum levy amount to 44 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value, according to the release. This amount could fluctuate over time.
