Parents of students at Spanaway Middle School were alerted Wednesday by the Bethel School District to a so-called “sexting” incident involving students.

District spokeswoman Krista Carlson told the News Tribune that school staff became aware of the inappropriate message being passed among students and officials decided to alert parents.

She said the district message told parents that if their student had received the “sexting” message, they should delete it. It also asked parents to talk with their children about phone safety and the dangers of sending inappropriate messages.

“Whatever you send, it can stay with you for a very long time,” she said. “And it may end up in places you didn’t anticipate.”

Carlson also said the school plans to review district-approved phone safety curriculum with students, possibly as early as Friday.
