A bill has been introduced to assist the city of Lakewood’s efforts to annex neighboring Camp Murray.

Senate Bill 5068 and its companion, House Bill 1158, empower the state’s adjutant general to petition for the annexation of state land used for military purposes to a city or town.

The legislation is attempted to overcome an obstacle city officials identified as they looked further into bringing the home of the Washington Military Department into the city: Who in state government has the authority to move the process forward?

City Manager Andrew Neiditz said the city is “looking for clarification on who can approve it.”

Under current state law, the adjutant general must keep a record of all property owned or used by the state for military purposes. He also can authorize leases and easements.

The bill was referred to committee today.
