Editor’s note: This video is a production of former Puyallup Herald editor Heather Meier. After more than a decade in journalism, Meier in now a full-time graduate student in University of Washington’s Master of Communication in Digital Media program. She will graduate in June 2013.
For more than 30 years, Puyallup’s New Beginnings Home has provided sanctuary for hundreds of pregnant women without any other place to turn. The home’s tough-love principles require moms-to-be to attend church each Sunday, prepare dinner once a week, study budgeting guidelines and go to school.
But opponents of religious-based maternity homes say the ideology can be too restrictive and problematic, ultimately requiring young women to adopt views that are not their own.
