Tacoma Public Schools alumni are speaking up about terrific teachers in a series of public service announcements produced by the school district.
The district has a series of 10 videos, each featuring an alum remembering something special about the teacher who made a difference in their lives.
The district is posting one 60-second spot weekly for 10 weeks on its Web, You Tube and Facebook pages.
Featured first was singer Vicci Martinez, who talked about the time teacher Claudia Turner encouraged her to sing in front of her class at McIlvaigh Middle School.
This week, the featured video showed Stadium High School grad April McArthur, now an educator herself at the Washington State School for the Deaf, thanking teacher Jerene Callan for helping her to understand reading.

Upcoming videos will include, among others, Tacoma Fire Chief Jim Duggan, school board member and former Tacoma mayor Karen Vialle and Eric Boles, a Foss High School grad, former NFL player and current business motivational speaker.
These are the RARE exceptions, not the rule!

The Tacoma Public Schools have sent many, many successful young persons in the fields of education, the arts, politics, law, economics, medcine, restuaranteurs, just to name a few. Take a stroll through Mt. Tahoms High School’s “Wall of Fame’ photo essay to read about its past graduates and where they are today. And that is just one of our high schools. Look at a list of past Mayors, Senators, Basketball Players, Corporate Executives and note how many went to Tacoma’s schools.I’m proud to be a Lincoln High grad and of the many grads from all of our schools that I meet in my travels. They are proud too.
