Neiditz tapped to be first director of South Sound 911

A board of police and fire chiefs today unanimously recommended Lakewood City Manager Andrew Neiditz to become the first executive director of South Sound 911.

Neiditz was selected from three finalists. The other two were Washington State Ferries Director David Moseley and Jack Harper II, city manager of Hillsboro, Texas.

Neiditz, 59, has been Lakewood’s city manager since March 2005.

The next step is for the recommendation to go to the South Sound 911 Policy Board Wednesday. It’s unclear whether the Policy Board will take a vote then on whether to confirm Neiditz or wait until a future meeting, said county spokesman Hunter George.

The combined operations board of 10 police and fire leaders recommended Neiditz, who was also the top choice of a search committee.

Neiditz has been city manager of Lakewood since March 2005. He was runner-up for Tacoma city manager a year ago.

The position has an annual salary range of $175,000 to $205,000.

South Sound 911 is the new agency working to build a seamless emergency communications system in Pierce County.

In November 2011, Pierce County voters approved raising the sales tax by a penny on every $10 purchase to help build a combined radio network and two new dispatch centers. The tax increase took effect in April.

The departure of Neiditz from the City of Lakewood would add to the leadership changes. Lakewood would not only need a new city manager. Mayor Doug Richardson is leaving the City Council to become a member of the Pierce County Council in January.

Neiditz gets unanimous recommendation to be South Sound 911’s first director

A panel of police and fire managers voted Friday, Dec. 14 to recommend Andrew Neiditz as the first executive director of South Sound 911.

The recommendation, on a unanimous vote in a public meeting, advances for consideration by the new agency’s Policy Board, a nine-member body of elected officials who meet Dec. 19.

If confirmed by the Policy Board, Neiditz will be the first executive director of the voter-approved agency that is replacing the patchwork of independent and obsolete radio systems and dispatch centers with a seamless emergency communications network.

Neiditz has more than 25 years of senior executive experience in local government. He has been the Lakewood city manager since 2005. He earlier served as city administrator in Sumner and he held two leadership positions for Pierce County – deputy county executive and later as executive director of public safety, where he provided oversight of six departments.

Neiditz was selected from a pool of 32 applicants from 18 states. He was the top choice among three finalists who were vetted by a search committee and then voted on Friday by the Combined Operations Board, a panel of police and fire chiefs representing member agencies.

    Wow 200,000.00 bucks a year plus Benny’s. But we need the extra sales tax, because all those 911 fees you pay on your house and cells phones for each number isn’t enough. And we blew the federal money. Taking money from your wallet everyday.

    OMG! The Old Boy system in Pierce County is going full steam ahead. Explain to me what experience he has concerning running a communications center?
    The salary is over the top. Who is setting the pay for these, I use the term carefully, Managers?
    I was not given a say as a taxpayer.
    Neiditz, can you explain to us, the taxpayers of Pierce County, what experience you have? Were you ever a Cop, Fireman, Dispactcher or a Call reciever…I didn’t yhink so. Another professional politician.

    Zikes! I am surprised at the salary for a government position. However this man as I understand it has taken Lakewood from the brink of despair to one of the most upscale cities in Washington. He must have the golden touch.

    This is the reward he gets for overlooking and turning a blind eye to all the misdeeds, indiscretions and illegal activities by the LPD specifically the Chief and Administration all these years. The Good Old Boys Club lives on. Note who the article says voted for him.

    I dont think most people here get the idea of why he was hired. He was chosen to manage south sound 911 not answer calls or dispatch. To that end he is very qualified as he has been a city manager for 7 or so years.How many people here were truly qualified for their own job when they were hired? Did you learn skills on the job? As will he. Some people have to complain about everything and every decision any goverment agency makes.

    You are an ignorant fool. Your statement is baseless and lacking any sort of intelligence. LPD works very hard and has fast become a very respected agency throughout the state and country. Lakewood is a tough town. Would love to see you even attempt their jobs. You would fail miserably, no doubt.

  10. Neiditz is a great pick. The negativity on here is uninformed. Envy is truly a pitiful thing.

    Here’s the thing – managing a complex public organization, whether an agency like South sound 911 or a large city requires many of the same skills. The manager must draft and manage a large budget, deal with unions, keep elected officials happy, and deal with a variety of complex day to day issues that would wear down a lesser person. Neiditz has done all of that. He’s been involved in public safety issues his whole career. The truth of the matter is that rising through the ranks as a cop, firefighter or dispatcher doesn’t really generate the organizational skills necessary to run a large organization, so that argument is a red herring.

  11. I worked with Andy when he was Deputy County Executive. I was the volunteer administrator for a county-wide program. He was always, helpful, courteous, informed, and if he didn’t have the answer to the unknown territory problems in which we ventured, he admitted it and then went and found solutions. It was Tacoma’s great loss when they passed him over for City Manager because he knows the territory. His record at Lakewood is remarkable. I have total confidence that Andy is the right person for this job. Congratulations and Good Luck, Andy!

    Consider that at Mr. Neiditz’s level, one doesn’t have to have experience as a dispatcher/cop/etc. One has to be a good administrator, budgeter, delegator, communicator. The CEO of General Motors doesn’t have to know how to build a car engine, folks. Mr. Neiditz is there to effectively manage a huge range of varied assets, not answer 911 calls. I can’t say if it’s worth $200K a year, having never done that job, myself. If he improves public safety and saves lives, then, yeah, I suppose he’s worth that amount.
