Staff and students at Tacoma’s Lister Elementary School were saddened to learn of the death of their former principal, Rafael “Ray” Maltos, in October.
They’re hosting a memorial tailgate party for a man who was known not only as a dedicated educator – but a dedicated Husky fan. The Lincoln High School cheer team and Lincoln’s drum line will provide entertainment. Sponsors, including the Emerald Queen Casino, are providing refreshments.
Current and former Lister kids, parents, staff members and friends are invited to attend – and to wear either purple and gold in honor of Maltos’ alma mater, or your favorite football colors. The party is scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. at the school, 2106 E. 44th St., Tacoma.
Maltos began his teaching career in 1976 in Sunnyside, Wash., where he was born. He was later a principal there and in Kodiak Island, Alaska. He became principal at Lister in 2004, where he served until his retirement in June 2012.
Maltos died Oct. 6 after a six-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 61.
