Puyallup City Council accepts $45,000 for child memorial at Woodbine Cemetery

The Puyallup City Council accepted a donation of roughly $45,000 Tuesday night to build a memorial in Woodbine Cemetery for Charlie and Braden Powell and other children who have died.

The funds were raised through donations to Crime Stoppers of Tacoma-Pierce County in the wake of the Powell boys’ tragic deaths.

Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5, were killed by their father, Josh, in February when he struck them with a hatchet and blew up the house he rented in the Graham area. He also died in the explosion.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department bought gravesites alongside where the boys are buried in Woodbine to prevent Josh Powell from being buried next to them.

Donations came from around the world for that cause, and at $50,000, they were enough for the memorial.

The cemetery agreed to reserve the hillside where the boys are buried for children.

Crime Stoppers and the maternal grandparents of the boys agreed the memorial would be a bronze angel to watch over the hill.

It’s to be set on a granite base and have solar lighting.

  1. Such a memorial is a lovely way to celebrate the lives of those two little boys.
The generosity of strangers never fails to amaze and touch me.

  2. I would think that Mom and Dad would want to be next to their kids.
Having a children’s section up there would be a good idea.
How many children are buried with no one?

Mom i’m sure would love to be with her sons if dad hadn’t been such a puke and killed her and was too spineless to give her family the respect of telling them where he hid their daughter after he killed her. His whole blood line should be removed from the planet starting with that low life father of his. Oh yeah and 2nd…… The sister. Pukes. All of them.

Every time I even think about this it pisses me off.

Why not leave a note and let her parents know what you did with her?

You are already going to help society by killing yourself, but why not tie up loose ends with a note and NOT kill your children?

I’m surprised Puyallup Council even allowed it. One vocal council member, Steve Vermillion, fought for the the right for the murderous father to be buried alongside his two victims.

I still have his disgusting e-mail on the matter.

Fortunately, the Powell family decided to inter his remains elsewhere. No thanks to Vermillion et al.

I wrote in puyallupmutt (A. David Churchman) for president. He is so damn smart! Sits around on his arse and thinks up all kinds of cool stuff!

A former student of mine, Kimmie Daily, is buried across the road from the Powell boys in the Woodbine Cemetery. Kimmie was brutally killed in August of 2010. Because she was 16 years old, the police couldn’t help look for her for the first 24 hours, even though Kimmie was a Special Needs young lady and had the emotional maturity of about 9 years old. Kimmie’s dad has been trying to get a law similar to an Amber Alert for young adults with Special Needs.

If we are going to have a monument for children, I believe Kimmie should be included. The last time I saw her alive was in late May of 2010. She ran across the Ballou school field to give me a big hug. How many 16 year olds would do that?! Kimmie had a huge loving heart.
