Lakewood lands truck dealership

Kenworth Northwest is trucking into Lakewood with a new dealership.

The 26,000-square-foot service and sales center is scheduled to open this summer and bring with it 25 jobs, hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales-tax revenue to the city and another business to assist the redevelopment of Pacific Highway.

City officials gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony Friday on the site on the 12500 block of Pacific Highway.

The location of the new center, Kenworth Northwest’s eighth, was selected due to traffic congestion on Interstate 5 making it difficult for its customers to reach its next closest dealerships in Aberdeen and Sea Tac.

“We need to be closer to our customer base so we can better service them,” said Marshall Cymbaluk, Kenworth Northwest’s general manager, in a statement.

Choi Halladay, the city’s finance director, estimated the dealership will generate between $250,000 to $500,000 a year in sales-tax to the city, similar to an auto dealership. Kenworth’s trucks sell for a lot more than a Honda or Toyota but fewer are sold each year.

The revenue will help the city. The city’s two-year budget includes cutbacks and those reductions would have been steeper if Lakewood couldn’t factor in the additional revenue from Kenworth.

Tacoma-based Korsmo Construction is the general contractor for the project.
