Social Security offices nationwide, including in Tacoma and Puyallup will cut half an hour daily of the time they’re open to the public as of Nov. 19, administrators said Wednesday.

The offices will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Beginning Jan. 2, the office will close to the public at noon on Wednesdays.

Employees will work their same schedules. The shorter public window will let them do other work without overtime costs, according to the agency.

The administration cited reduced funding from Congress as the reason for the reduction.

Offices will be closed Nov. 23, as they were last year, for employees to focus on backlogged work.

Some East Coast offices will delay the new hours due to the impact of Superstorm Sandy.
