Civil rights leader and social activist Julian Bond will speak at Pierce College Puyallup Thursday Oct. 18, the first in the college’s annual Arts and Speakers series.

Bond will offer a lecture titled “Race to the White House: The Politics of Civil Rights.” His presentation will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 in the college’s Arts and Allied Health Theatre, 1601 39th Ave. S.E., Puyallup.

Bond, 72, helped to establish the influential Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in the 1960s. He served in the Georgia legislature and as president of the Southern Poverty Law Center. He was chairman of the NAACP.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, and $5 for Pierce College students with I.D. Call 253-840-8416 for information.

I would hope that Pierce College would follow this speaker up with a credible person that would balance the perspective that Julian Bond has always portrayed. We don’t need anymore activists who tend to stir emotions up that are negative and a detriment to our society.

Well, considering I’m employed at Pierce College, I fully agree with you. But I doubt that will happen. I considered getting tickets to this, but I don’t need to see yet another “If Obama doesn’t win, it’s racism” speech. Just once I would like to see a civil rights speaker at this college that can actually celebrate how far we’ve come from the dark days of Jim Crow and segregation, someone who can actually give INSPIRATION to young people rather than the negativity that you speak of.
