Sacramento Mayor and former NBA All-Star Kevin Johnson will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 4 at UW-Tacoma’s William Phillip Hall.
Johnson will discuss obstacles to college access faced by low-income students and students of color, and speak on the potential for change in Washington’s public schools. This event is free and open to the public.
Johnson established the St. HOPE Foundation, which focused on neighborhood development and education in his hometown of Sacramento. It also opened the St. Hope public charter schools.
The event is presented by the League of Education Voters Foundation in partnership with the University of Washington Tacoma, the Black Education Strategy Roundtable, and Democrats for Education Reform.
Judging from the list of sponsors, I’m assuming this is going to focus on promoting charter schools.

Yes, it sure does look like some of usual charter school pushers. As far as I am concerned our Mayor has betrayed the voters by working to undermine our Tacoma School District. Where is the tax revenue and jobs for us with charter schools. Her focus in what is best for the city seems to have been clouded by her personal life and new found celebrity social scene. We are very disappointed with her job performance at our house.

Yes, her tenure has been one shameful thing after another. She accepted airline miles from someone to travel to asia (of course she gave them back when she was caught. She welcomed Walmart with open arms. She has used her influence to give union janitorial jobs to scabs. And she is trying to open the doors of our public school system to an expensive system of privately run, publicly funded schools; a system that has not been proven to be more effective than public schools.

UWT is a publicly owned university. How is the university allowed to “partner” with the league of education voters to present this pro corporate charter school event? In our state university?
