WSDOT says Narrows bridges still standing, despite distorted iOS 6 photo

A distorted aerial photo of the Tacoma Narrows Bridges released Wednesday as part of the maps in Apple’s iOS 6 mobile operating system caused the Washington State Department of Transportation to Tweet Thursday that the bridges are still intact.

A tumblr.com blog called The Amazing iOS 6 Maps, mocking the new system,  posted the picture with the caption: “Oh no, Galloping Gertie is back!” The reference was to the predecessor of the current bridge, which collapsed in 1940.

The social media post had more than 250 views Thursday afternoon, and was mentioned in a New York Times article about criticism of the maps.

    Apple’s finest!

  2. Well, that’s the way the local bridges tumble.
However I wouldn’t want to drive off a bridge either.

  3. BillBrewster says:

I thought the bridge felt different crossing it the other morning.

  4. Are they serious! They really felt the need to reassure the public? Are people really that dumb?

(Smacks hand on forehead! Of course! What was I thinking!)

  5. dbreneman says:

Mapquest has had an awkwardly joined picture of the bridge for years.

  6. gonefishin69690 says:

This was probably the original WSDOT design

Well, actually that image is likely a left over conceptual picture from one of the proposed designs for the second Narrows Bridge project. Fortunately that design group did not get the contract. Unfortunately they apparently did get the contract for designing the Nalley Valley Viaduct Interchange Project . Thus far, we now have the Sprague Street “Evil Kneivel” Exit ramp and the “Well, if your coming from northbound I-5 and you value your life, don’t exit here!” Union Street Exit area. And this is with only the first phase of the project. Two more phases to go…yippee! Apparently one phase is for Moe, one for Larry, and the other for Curly. If Apple had only known…..

They should put a loop in the midle of it. Maybe even two.

and the TNT believes this is news worthy?? Waste of space.

  12. mojjonation says:

I’s rumored that this is the original bridge design and Castrol motor oil was going to shoot their commercials on it.

Exactly….I admit it….I most definitely dont get YOU! :D
