Officials at Zoo Atlanta have released preliminary necropsy findings following the recent passing of Ivan the gorilla, who died at the zoo on August 20.
According to the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine Zoo and Exotic Animal Pathology Service, preliminary partial necropsy findings show that Ivan’s immediate cause of death was likely associated with an invasive mass in the chest. Early partial test results indicate that this was a tumor.
Detailed analysis and tests are still pending, Zoo Atlanta says. Final necropsy results are expected in eight weeks.
A public memorial service for Ivan is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday in The Ford African Rain Forest at Zoo Atlanta.
Per the wishes of the family of Ivan’s original owners and of the Woodland Park Zoo, his remains were cremated and will be returned to Tacoma.
RIP Ivan, your free now you should have never been captured for profit.

Your free at last my friend. The first time I saw Ivan I didn’t know much about the Great Apes, he sparked my learning. I walked to the rear of the store, in my minds I see myself as the only one there but of course we know that’s not true. I walked up to his inclosure and looked in and before I knew it “bam!” he came across his cage and his huge knuckles landed on his window to the world the one he came to know. Angry? Yes I would think so, I was just another set of prying eyes invading the cramped space he was place in after living his young life just as we did as children do. I believe later in his life he became aware why he was placed there, his size compared to ours and the fear he saw in the eyes of the people that viewed him. The things he never got over was the separation from the love he once had known and the rejection he felt in his life. I believe the Great Apes possess most of the things that we do. I hope the we can preserve there world. The next injustice would be to see his ashes setting on a shelve somewhere. “From dust to dust” Do the right thing by him.
