University Place isn’t happy that congressional candidate Dick Muri has said the city will go broke, resurrecting rumors city officials have attempted to quash as recently as last summer.

One of Muri’s comments was caught on video and can be viewed by clicking here (fast-forward to 4:30 of the video for his full comment.)

Below is the draft letter that Mayor Ken Grassi had city staff prepare in response to Muri’s comments. The council had mixed feelings about the letter so it wasn’t sent out. Instead, Grassi called Muri to discuss the matter Tuesday.

Here’s the debt reduction plan the city is following to pay off the tens of millions of dollars it borrowed to develop Town Center and make other improvements.

If I understand this correctly, Dino Grassi is upset that a UP resident, one who is running for Congress, dared speak the truth? My question for da Mayor would be why my entire neighborhood has no lights, sidewalks, sewers (don’t most urban dwellers in other communities have sewers?), police patrols, or Santa on the firetruck. Yes, our wealthy city even cut some of the “borderland” neighborhoods out of the firetruck Santa’s route–because no one is this town’s government/administration have the guts to make any decisions that adversely affect “old” UP. Wake up Mayor and city clowncil members: Those of us without the proper Curtis HS lineage (it seems that it must be at least two generations to be considered a real UPeon). Well Ken, you hold on tight to your vision, though I do have to tell you it called a “memory” when you looking at the past. There hasn’t been a visionary on our city clowncil in the 10 years I have lived here (I know, not nearly enough to have an opinion, right Ken?). I just can’t help but wonder if the mayor still has a Bird singing is his ear. Or maybe he is still taking orders for our recently put to pasture former mayer, UP’s own Iron Maedchen, Herr frau Linda von Klausewitz. Well, Ken and clowncilors, don’t say I didn’t tell you when the Nu UPeons (oh, we’ll call ourselves the N-UPs) level the playing field in this town(e). Is that in your vision Ken? Enjoy the ride, Mayor, because it will all be a memory someday soon enough. Maybe then we will get this sidewalks, street lights, and sewers. You can keep Santa, though; most of the kids from the borderlands (and don’t forget those pesky “apartment kids”) already know that he stopped coming to UP years ago, right after he heard about the Town(e) Center. Thanks, mayor(s).

Oh, if only the blog had an edit feature. Many apologies for the quick typing/delayed proofreading. Still, Mayor, I’m sure you get my point.

Hey don’t complaint to loud Prufrock1962 as most of UP has no streetlights. If it weren’t for the house lights being turned on by our neighbors we would be left in the dark also.
Sewers, yes we have them through a ULID that was finally paid off by the residents affected a few years back.
Police, well there you got me. I don’t understand how you can expect police patrols when we only have a four man force, well uniformed force. They need to have their rest break just like every working stiff, so if you want patrols shut down all the coffee shops and add more banks. Remember the Mayor did say staff cuts and the police were the first hit by cuts.
Santa.. well we do see him but the schedule is hid somewhere and no a publised as it was a few years ago… guess the staff person who did that was laid off.
What surpises me is that you din’t comment on the number of resterants that have left town. For a council that wanted to have a walkable city center, well now I need to leave town for an expensive “American style” meal, thanks to their foresite. Let’s se we have Mexican (1), Asian (5), Italian (1) and well a number of fast food style drive throughs. Can’t seem to find where I can get a sit down american meal anymore..oh well hopefully Lakewood will come to our rescue….

yeah.. an editor would sure help this site… word editor that is..Yikes!!!
