Point Defiance Elementary School in Tacoma will be closed Thursday, May 17 due to a break in the water line.

The break was detected early Wednesday. Tacoma Public Schools brought in portable toilets and other supplies to operate school on Wednesday.

School District officials said they are working with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, which must inspect the emergency repair to the main water line to the school. Once the health department determines the water supply is clean and safe, the school can reopen on Friday. If unforeseen problems delay the reopening beyond Friday, the school will notify parents.

Students will not have to make up the lost school day, district officials said. Point Defiance staff members are to report to work at the district Professional Development Center Thursday on their normal schedule.
