Protests interrupt Rick Santorum speech

Upon further review, maybe it wasn’t the best site to host a rally for a Republican presidential candidate.

Outside the Washington State History Museum downtown, Santorum is speaking in a beautiful setting — one that is right next to the Occupy Tacoma encampment.

Santorum had no sooner started speaking than Occupy activists in the crowd interrupted him with chants. Police hauled some of them off but chants could still be heard throughout his speech, often drowned out by the mostly supportive crowd’s cheers.

Santorum quickly turned them into the focus of his speech.

There are going to be people in this country that are vocal and that are working hard to change what this country is all about. … They don’t want to hear what the other side has to say. All they’re interested in is shouting out. Why? Because if they have a reasoned, rational discussion they can’t be successful. They can’t win.

“We hear people here tonight trying to divide America into one percentage and another percentage,” he said, and President Barack Obama “supported them and embraced them.”

The biggest applause line came when he suggested protesters, “instead of standing here unemployed yelling at somebody, to go out and get a job and work for a living.”

  1. I love how he decries his detractors as people who are trying to change what our country is about meanwhile harping on about how God’s law trumps man’s. That guy can go fly a kite.

I watched Live on King 5. The creepy underlighting on the Santorum face… the screaming.. the glitter bomb throwing… I think he even had to dodge a flying shoe. It was the best 45 minutes of my life.

  3. As well deserved as it might be, that sort of stuff doesn’t help. It’s just widening the gap.

  4. Hobbledeyhoy says:

He made a speech? I thought he was just here to protest the funeral of the Powell kids.

  5. bobbletiki says:

Santorum should fire his imbecile scout team.

  6. I’m embarrassed to be from Tacoma. But then this disgusting rabble can be found all over the country disrupting free speech, fouling neighborhoods, and, yes, writing inane, sick comments like the ones above.

  7. guidocarmasi says:

Santorum must be crazy to speak in Tacoma. Its amazing it got out of town unscathed.

  8. NineInchNachosII says:

Santorum is a frothy mixture of sweater-vest and pin head

  9. resident says:

It was our free speech right to protest tonight, and I was screaming along with folks and was not part of the Occupy movement. Don’t “blame” them for all the dissent, this frothy blowhard upsets us gay folks, too.

It was fun to scare the villagers, even if it does make them find the torches and pitchforks for next time.

Today was OUR day, and he came here intentionally to oppose our rights. So our right to protest that act is the “Freedom” we are all fighting to retain for ourselves. If we didn’t stand up they’d call us cowards.
