The Pierce County Library System will temporarily close its Gig Harbor branch and hold its annual card drive during October.

The Gig Harbor Pierce County Library will close from Oct. 12 to 31 so workers can centralize its customer service area, install new carpet, apply a fresh coat of paint and create a new area for patrons to look for and check out DVDs and CDs. The library is located at 4424 Point Fosdick Dr. NW.

During the closure, patrons can continue to pick up items they placed on hold in the library’s meeting room. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday and Tuesday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday.

Through the month of October, residents who sign up for a new library card can enter a drawing for an iPad 2. Patrons who already have a card can enter the drawing if they sign up someone else for a card.

More than 6,200 people signed up for a library card during last year’s drive.

Forty-seven percent — or 251,000 out of a total of 527,000 — people who live in the library system’s service area have a library card.
