The Washington State Department of Transportation is holding an open house Wednesday, Aug. 31, to provide an update on the Point Defiance Bypass project.

The event runs from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the rotunda of Building 3 at Clover Park Technical College, 4500 Steilacoom Blvd. SW in Lakewood.

Residents can learn more about the project, speak with staff members, ask questions and provide comments and ideas.

WSDOT is proposing to reroute its growing Amtrak Cascades passenger service from a congested freight route around Tacoma’s Point Defiance, to a dedicated passenger rail corridor that runs through south Tacoma, Lakewood and DuPont. Some residents and city leaders in DuPont and Lakewood have objected to the proposal, citing safety concerns.

The open house occurs as WSDOT has narrowed the scope of the environmental study required to move the project forward.

For more information, contact Melanie Coon, the project’s communications manager, at 360-705-7905 or e-mail her here.

  1. What a great idea. Hold a public meeting on the P.D. bypass, a project that will affect thousands in Tacoma. Where should we hold the meeting??? HHHMMMMM. One of the hundreds of public meeting facilities here in Tacoma??? You would think so, huh. No, let’s go clear down to Steilacoom Blvd. in LAKEWOOD! Why not Olympia? Better yet, Ellensberg. No, wait, I’ve got it. Let’s all meet in Cheney. Home to the Eastern Wash. University Eagles, the NCAA Div 2 Football Champs. Heck, DOT, if you’re going to move the meeting away from Tacoma, at least move it to a town with Championship credentials. And the 4 hour drive will give us plenty of time to consider our questions. The ride back will allow us time to reflect upon how we got screwed yet again. Bunch of twits.

  2. What’s the point? They aren’t going to listen to the public.
