This just in from Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium:

Two 6-week-old clouded leopard cubs at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium received their names today. A total of 5,317 votes were submitted online over the past month through the zoo’s website and Facebook pages.

The male will be called Taji (TA-jee), meaning “little brother” in Burmese, and the female is Sumalee (su-ma-LEE), meaning “flower” in Thai.  Taji ran away with the male selections with 44 percent of the votes, and Sumalee won with 29 percent.

Zoo staff came up with five options for each cub with the majority of names coming from Thailand, one of the native habitats for endangered clouded leopards.

The cubs, born on June 14, can be seen daily during zoo hours in the cub den of the zoo’s soon-to-open Cats of the Canopy exhibit. They also have two public feedings in the cub den each day at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

  1. What ever happened to names like Sam and Jane?

  2. joyceloveland says:

I’m comfortable with these zoo “officials” in charge of rearing these cubs as they still have issues with their other zoo attractions that still haven’t been dealt with.
We’ll see if these two actually reach adulthood.

  3. joyceloveland says:

that should read NOT comfortable with them rearing those cubs or any species.

  4. jcalexander says:

When your clouded leopard has cubs, feel free to call them what you like.

  5. skippythedog says:

….but can the relatively inexperienced staff there keep them alive?

  6. After the last week of news I kind of crave the cute stories.

  7. nwcolorist says:

I would have voted for Sam and Jane.

  8. What is up with all the “inexperienced staff” jibes you’ve been making, Skippythedog? If you have some actual information about this, why don’t you share with the class. Otherwise, stop sniping at every zoo story unless you are willing to back it up with facts.
