The public will get a chance to hear Debra Friedman, the new chancellor of the University of Washington Tacoma, speak at the City Club of Tacoma luncheon meeting on July 20.

Friedman, who took over as chancellor of UWT on July 1, will discuss the university’s future and her role as the school’s leader.

The Seattle native and UW graduate was chosen to lead the university in April. She comes to Tacoma from Arizona State University, where she served as dean of the College of Public Programs and professor of public affairs since 2005. Since 2008, she also served as university vice president, responsible for the university’s Downtown Phoenix campus. From 1994 to 2005, Friedman worked in various administrative positions at the University of Washington in Seattle.

The luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on July 20 at the Tacoma Art Museum, 1701 Pacific Ave. Tickets are $30 for the general public; $22 for members, and $27 for guests of members. Attendees must reserve a spot by 5 p.m., July 18 by sending an e-mail to office@cityclubtacoma.org.
