A dinner and silent auction to raise money for Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson, who’s battling cancer, is 6:30 p.m. May 18 at Swiss Park, 9205 198th Ave E., Bonney Lake.
A bone marrow donor drive also will be held during the event.
Johnson, 46, was diagnosed earlier this year with chronic myelogenous leukemia, which affects the blood and bone marrow.
He’s undergoing chemotherapy and needs a bone marrow transplant.
Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. They’re available here.
Donations also can be made at Harborstone Credit Union, 20608 State Route 410 E., Bonney Lake.
Johnson has been Bonney Lake’s mayor since 2006. The city has a mayor-council form of government, which means he’s the chief administrator. But City Administrator Don Morrison told The News Tribune earlier this month that he and Johnson talk nearly every day and Johnson is “still in charge” as he undergoes treatment.
In addition to serving as mayor, Johnson works full-time in sales and marketing at Rotary Offset Press in Kent.
He’s married with two daughters.

I wish Mayor Johnson the best of everything and I hope he has a speedy recovery. However, in the greatest country in the world, we should be ashamed that someone who is fighting cancer should have to worry about having a fundraiser to pay the bills.

I feel bad that I am self employed and the TNT would not carry a story about my cancer story.
Bonney Lake must be in pretty bad shape that they do not cover insurance for their city employees. Tacoma has no problem with that and able to give salery increases.
