U.S. Postal Service may move Puyallup carriers, won’t close downtown post office

The letter carriers who deliver mail from the downtown post office in Puyallup may be shifted to the South Hill and Sumner locations this summer.

But the longtime U.S. Post Office on Second Street Southwest isn’t closing its doors, and customers won’t see their service affected if the change happens, said Ernie Swanson, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service’s Seattle district, which includes Puyallup.

Letter carriers who deliver to the 98371 zip code would work from the South Hill office, and carriers who deliver to the 98372 zip code would work out of Sumner, he said.

He didn’t have the number of carriers who work out of downtown Puyallup, but between the two zip codes there are 29 routes, he said.

The idea is to save some money by centralizing the workforce, he said. No letter carriers would lose their jobs, and the “retail associates” who help customers would remain at the downtown location, Swanson said.

Some supervisor positions could be relocated, he said.

The post office hours would remain the same.

Nationwide, the postal service has seen a significant reduction in mail volume in recent years. Since 2006, the volume dropped from 213 billion to 170 billion pieces delivered a year, he said.

“When you lose that volume of mail, the revenue falls off too,” Swanson said. “In some cases, we’re looking at the possibility of closing post offices, but that’s not the case in Puyallup.
