The state Transportation Commission will hold two public hearings this month on the proposed $5.50 photo toll for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
The meetings will be held on Jan. 19 and 25.
Both meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. at Gig Harbor City Hall, 3510 Grandview St.
An open house will be held before the meetings at 5:30 p.m. so residents can learn more about photo tolling.
The appointed commission will take final action on the toll after the public hearing on Jan. 25.
Under photo tolling, motorists who don’t pay at the tollbooth and don’t have a Good to Go transponder would receive a bill in the mail.
It costs $4 to pay at the toll booth and $2.75 to cross the bridge using Good to Go. The toll is collected in the eastbound direction only. These tolls won’t change.
The commission can’t set the photo toll, at least immediately.
Following voter approval of Initiative 1053 in November, the office of Attorney General Rob McKenna issued an informal opinion last month that revoked the authority of the commission to set tolls and ferry fares.
Lawmakers could approve the final toll or delegate the decision back to the transportation commission.
WSDOT had proposed $4.25, and a citizens advisory committee came back with $7 as an intentional deterrent because members worried use of photo tolling would result in lost revenue for the bridge
