Taste of Tacoma: Whatcha Eatin’?

Taste of Tacoma started today under overcast skies. I’m sitting in front of the Bowl Stage listening to the Nolan Garrett Trio, a young group of guys who play guitar-driven classic rock: Think Michael J. Fox in “Back to the Future” playing “Johnny B. Goode.” The group will play again at 7 tonight on the Country Stage.

2:10 p.m.: The band Hairmegeddon is playing Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive.” I feel like “Deadliest Catch” is about to start.

2:20 p.m.: The sun is starting to burn through the clouds.

While the music provides a nice backdrop, the real attraction is the food. Throughout the afternoon, I’ll be walking around and asking people, “Whatcha eatin’?”

Annabelle Dickson, 5, Fircrest (with dad Donald Dickson): Dipped strawberry skewer covered in sprinkles, $7. “It tastes good,” she said. Donald added: “She wanted ice cream, then she saw that and wanted that.”

Warren Smith, Tacoma Fire Department, Station 14: Chicken gyro, $6. “It tastes good. A little spicy, but I enjoy it.” He and two other firefighters dropped by the Taste for lunch.

Brandon, Seattle: Piroshky (x2), $6 each. “I decided to go big. It’s excellent. I like the beef and the cheese together, wrapped tightly in this freshly baked roll.”

Silas Clarke, 22 months, with mom Shepanee Clarke of Lacey: Silas sat in a stroller and nibbled corn on the cob. He didn’t have much to say, but it’s clear this kid loves corn.

Theory Clarke, 6, of Lacey: Cup of Hawaiian shave ice covered with rainbow syrup. “It was the first thing she wanted,” said her mom, Shepanee.
