The same U.S. flag that hung amid the rubble at Ground Zero in New York after 9/11 will fly over the Lakewood Police Department on Monday.
The U.S. Honor Flag, which the Texas House of Representatives gifted to a middle-aged businessman who enrolled in the Army shortly after the attacks, honors the men and women who sacrifice their lives to protect their communities and country, according to www.ushonorflag.org. It has flown in war zones, at funerals and other venues. (I’ve posted a movie trailer from the same Web site about a documentary on the flag)
It will be in Washington Monday through Wednesday.
The honor flag will be raised over the Lakewood Police Department during a short ceremony starting 3:30 p.m., Monday. The department lost four officers — Sgt. Mark Renninger and officers Tina Griswold, Greg Richards and Ronald Owens — when they were gunned down by Maurice Clemmons in a Parkland coffee shop 29.
After the ceremony, officials will move the flag to the police department lobby, where members of regional law enforcement, fire service, Department of Corrections and military will stand watch over it until 8 p.m. A “changing of the guard” will occur every 20 minutes.
The Lakewood Police Department is located at 9401 Lakewood Drive Southwest.
