Cast your vote for one of 25 historic sites in the Puget Sound area – including six in Pierce County – that are competing for a share of $1 million in grant money from the Partners in Preservation program.

To raise awareness, most of the sites will have free open houses Saturday and Sunday. Many sites will offer tours, refreshments and entertainment.

The winner will be decided by online vote, which runs through May 12. People are allowed to vote once per day.

As of Friday afternoon, the Schooner Adventuress was leading with 17 percent of the vote. On the contest website, people are also encouraged to submit stories about the historic sites.

The winning project will receive its share of funding, then civic and preservation leaders will decide how to distribute the remaining money to other projects. The program is sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express.

Here’s the list of Pierce County sites in the competition, along with information on open houses and special events:

Schooner Adventuress

Where: 705 Dock Street, Tacoma
When: 9 a.m.-noon Saturday; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.
Saturday and Sunday: Tours of the schooner focus on working aboard a historic vessel, marine life in the Puget Sound and how to make a difference in the future of our waterways. The tour is free. Climb the rigging for $25.

Spanish Steps

Where: South Seventh and Commerce streets, Tacoma
When: Noon-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday and Sunday: Continue a time-honored Tacoma tradition with a “before” picture taken on the Steps and learn about the rehabilitation of the Spanish Steps and adjacent Elks Lodge.

Titlow Park Lodge

Where: 8425 Sixth Ave., Tacoma
When: Noon-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
Saturday: Camp games, crafts and fun; exhibits on Titlow Park history; refreshments and drawings for free camp registrations.
Sunday: Residents are invited to share memories and stories about Titlow; exhibits on Titlow Park history; drawings for free lodge and picnic rentals.

Skansie Brothers Net Shed

Where: 3207 Harborview Drive, Gig Harbor
When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday; Noon-4 p.m. Sunday
Saturday: Live music and entertainment; net shed tours and artifact displays; storytelling, net-mending contests and demonstrations.

Orting Soldiers Home – Garfield Hall

Where: 1301 Orting-Kapowsin Highway, Orting
When: Closed Saturday; noon-3:30 p.m Sunday
Sunday: Food, fishing and a veteran meet and greet.

Johnson Farm, Anderson Island Historical Society

Where: 9306 Otso Point Road, Anderson Island
When: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday; noon-4 p.m. Sunday
Saturday: Anderson Island Historical Society 35th year celebration and Partners in Preservation kickoff begins at noon; all farm buildings open to the public; docents at major buildings from noon-2 p.m.; free popcorn, hot dogs, desserts, door prizes and hay rides throughout the day.
