Safeco Field’s once overpacked stands are showing lots of empty seats now, at the bottom of the 9th, with the Mariners behind 4-zip in their 2010 home season debut.

Scoreboard exhortations of “NOISE” and “Pump it Up,” even a rousing “Animal House” movie clip of John Belushi, couldn’t lift the Mariners from defeat.

And the reaction Ken Griffey Jr. got from the dwindling crowd wasn’t nearly as loud nor as exuberant as that he received a few hours earlier at the start of the game.

With two out and no one on, Junior just flew out to end the game, a disappointing home opener for Seattle fans.
