Bye bye, Lakewood school vans

The Lakewood City Council amended its contract with its school-zone camera provider Monday, which means no more camera vans that nab speeders.

But don’t drive pedal-to-the-metal just yet, as the city will now install fixed cameras at two school zones and provide officer patrols at others.

Here are the first few graphs of the story is scheduled to appear in Wednesday’s paper:

Keeping it light at the fair

After last week’s experiment with fried food, I’m ready to change my ways for the final week of the fair.

Today I’ve been doing some research on the healthier options available.

The fair has a “Healthy Fare” menu it puts out to guide people toward options that aren’t dripping in grease or coated in sugar. The menu lists low-carb, sugar-free, vegetarian and low fat options at different food stands and restaurants at the fair.

Get chummy during annual festival in Gig Harbor

The City of Gig Harbor will hold its annual Donkey Creek Chum Festival on Oct. 10. This year’s mantra: It takes a fish to raise a village.

The city says that every year since 1972, the Gig Harbor Commercial Fisherman’s Club has incubated salmon eggs at Donkey Creek, releasing over 1 million smelt into Gig Harbor Bay. Each fall, mature salmon find their way from the open sea back to Austin Estuary, fighting their way up the culvert and into Donkey Creek to spawn.

“In celebration of this annual event, the Fisherman’s Club, the City of Gig Harbor, Harbor WildWatch environmental group, the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Club and many other local organizations have teamed up with one goal in mind – saving the salmon for future generations,” according to the press release.
