Be glad you don’t have this job this week

For people who say their roughing it with this week’s heat, try working Choon Kim’s job.

The owner of Fircrest Cleaners not only has to deal with the heat from outside, but inside his business it’s even hotter. The dry cleaning operation’s pressers are steaming from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The usual reprieve from the heat is to open the windows or walk outside, but not this week.

“We always use fans and air conditioning, but it’s not enough,” Kim said around 11 a.m. today, when the mercury in his business’ thermometer reached 94 degrees.

Kim’s is just of the already sweltering businesses that will find the job extra tough this week. From pizza delivery staffers to road crews, workers’ foreheads are drenched with sweat.

Simply standing in front of one of Kim’s pressers for about 10 seconds caused this reporter to perspire today. I can only imagine how hot it will be come 5 p.m.

Kim, who’s operated his business for seven years, says he usually doesn’t sweat during the day, even in the summer. But this week has marked the warmest and most uncomfortable work has been.

“Since yesterday, my customers have been saying, ‘Keep cool,'” he said. “I’m trying.”
