UPDATED to fix glitch in data – pushing WSU football coach Mike Leach to No. 2 overall in 2012.

Just as he was two years before, University of Washington football coach Steve Sarkisian was the top paid employee on the Washington state-government’s payroll in 2012. He earned $2.7 million in 2012 – money actually paid out of athletic department funds (like earnings from selling tickets or television rights for Husky games) and not by taxpayers.

While most state employees saw 3 percent reductions in pay and hours worked since July 2011, Sarkisian’s pay was up from $1.98 million in 2010 and $2.53 million in 2011.

It should be no surprise that athletics coaches took the top three spots. Washington State University football coach Mike Leach ranked No. 2 at $2.275 million in 2012. Men’s basketball coach Lorenzo Romar was No. 3 earning $1.35 million and Washington State University men’s basketball coach Ken Bone was No. 4 at $855,128.

Rounding out the top 6 were WSU president Elson Floyd at $625,023 and UW president Michael Young at $563,453.

By contrast, former Gov. Chris Gregoire (listed as Christine O’Grady Gregoire) earned $161,892 – after forfeiting a portion of her pay when other state workers’ pay was cut.

Under the state Constitution, pay for statewide elected officials, legislators and judges is set by a citizens commission.

The Office of Financial Management, which released the database here, noted on a frequently asked questions page that UW and WSU coaches’ salaries are paid out of athletic department funds and were not paid by taxpayer dollars. And university researchers, who are also at the top of the list, are paid through research grants, not taxes or tuition.

The top general-government agency salary went to Gary Bruebaker, chief investment officer for the State Investment Board, which manages roughly $68 billion in pension and other funds for state and local government. Bruebaker earned $358,346 last year, up from $303,582 in 2010. Bruebaker’s salary is paid out of investment earnings and not from taxpayer dollars.

Of the top 68 earners in all branches of government earning $300,000 or more, the lion’s share work in higher education:
