Fucito: ‘I don’t think we could have dominated any more’

Here’s more Sounders’ reaction from their final locker room of the season:

Lamar Neagle
On his goal)
“Fredy just played a good ball. They really kind of converged on him and I was wide open…We can score goals and we put enough pressure on them the whole game, especially because it was around the 70th minute when I scored, so we knew we had a lot of time and we definitely thought we could put another one away.”

On if the goal boosted his confidence) “Yeah. You can say it’s always difficult to get into the game when you’re

RSL coach credits Sounders, but not referee

Here’s some reaction from the Real Salt Lake locker room after they advanced to the Western Conference final with a 3-2 aggregate series win over Sounders FC:

RSL HEAD COACH JASON KREIS
On if he expected the game to go as it did)
“Yeah, I knew that at some point it was going to be like them wave after wave, serving balls into our box and seeing how we dealt with them. I expected – I really did expect us to be better with the ball than we were tonight. I felt like we were really hurried. We

Reading material: Sounders and their 7.2% chance

Some reading material leading up to tonight’s 7 p.m. first kick between Sounders and Real Salt Lake:

This MLSsoccer.com piece tries to quantify Seattle’s chance of advancing. (Not great.)

Here’s this morning’s TNT preview, which also quantifies the difficulty. (Great.)

Here’s a preview from the Salt Lake Tribune, with RSL perceptively anticipating an intense Seattle attack.

Next, an MLSsoccer.com update calling the status of RSL central defenders Nat Borchers and Jamison Olave gametime decisions.

And finally, a Deseret News piece about the potential dangers of RSL coming out with too defensive an attitude.

(I actually tried to get Sounders coach Sigi Schmid to talk about that Read more »

Sounders need great comeback … but not greatest

The Sounders dug themselves into a mighty deep hole by losing 3-0 on Saturday at Real Salt Lake.

However, digging out would not call for the greatest comeback in MLS playoff history.

That was performed by the 2003 San Jose Earthquakes, who fell four goals behind the Los Angeles Galaxy 13 minutes into the deciding game … rallied to tie in regulation … and advanced with another goal in extra time.

Sounders coach Sigi Schmid knows something about that, because he was coach of the Galaxy.

“We haven’t talked about that. That was such a weird game. … You

It’s settled: Mauro Rosales out for RSL match

Coach Sigi Schmid confirmed the expected after Sounders training today: Midfielder Mauro Rosales’ knee injury hasn’t healed quickly enough to allow him to play Wednesday in Seattle’s do-or-die match against Real Salt Lake.

In a nice little show of confidence and optimism, however, Schmid added that Rosales might be available for the Western Conference final on Sunday.

“It’s a situation of Mauro tried his best in terms of trying to come back,” Schmid said. “He’s much further along at the same timepoint of recovery from the injury as he was when he had the injury against D.C. United. Obviously there’s

Sounders can’t advance unless midfield is better

The Sounders had all sorts of problems in midfield Saturday, which went a long way to explaining their 3-0 loss at Real Salt Lake.

My story in today’s News Tribune notes that two of the very best players in MLS — Mauro Rosales and Steve Zakuani — were missing from that midfield. However, the guys who filled in have certainly filled in before with far better results. Coach Sigi Schmid even called out Osvaldo Alonso, who is usually as set-your-clock reliable as anyone in the league.

“We couldn’t keep the ball, we couldn’t hold on to the ball,” Schmid said. “Some of that was due to their pressure, but some of it was just our bad passing. That’s probably one of the worst games I’ve seen Alonso play in his three years with us. And it just wasn’t a good exhibition of soccer from us.”

And in an interesting list of five MLS playoff observations, Seattle’s wobbly midfield play was Read more »
