Playing time could follow goals for Ochoa

Ochoa

Sammy Ochoa scored a pair of goals in the Sounders’ 4-3 reserve win at Chivas USA on Monday.

Like most goal-scorers, he seems to think one could lead to two could lead to many. And coach Sigi Schmid seems to agree at least that two could lead to more opportunities.

Here’s some of what they had to say after training today:

OCHOA
I think after the first goal, the rest will come. I got two, so hopefully I keep scoring.

On if it will help him in the forward rotation: Yeah, I think so. Scoring goals helps you out a lot as a forward. I just have to keep playing the way I’m playing, and hopefully score a couple of more goals.

His take on the start of the season: We’ve been doing good, but we haven’t been scoring a lot, and our forwards haven’t been scoring a lot. Just Dave (Estrada) has the four goals. As the forwards, we’re the ones that have got to step up and scoring. Having those two goals helps me out a lot, and helps out the team, too. Hopefully we keep scoring goals.

His take on his playing time: You always want to be out there and Read more »

Ford had knee issue; Rosales and Ochoa settle in

Meredith
Ford

The Sounders went through a light trianing session this morning at Starfire.

Afterward, coach Sigi Schmid updated some of the personnel issues with his team heading into the Champions League group stage finale tomorrow, the MLS regular-season finale Saturday and the playoffs beyond.

On Bryan Meredith being the reserve keeper last night:
“(Josh) Ford’s got a little bit of a knee issue. His knee had tightened up, so he wasn’t able to go. That’s why Meredith was the backup. … Ford’s better today, we just have to see how he is.”

On getting Mauro Rosales back from his knee injury: “It was tremendous. He’s an important player for our team in terms of what he contributes on and off the field. I’m sure he’s happier Read more »

Ochoa doesn’t want to wait to 2012 to contribute

Ochoa

My Sounders story in today’s paper is on Sammy Ochoa, signed in August and just now rounding into full-game fitness.

Here’s what coach Sigi Schmid had to say on his progress and future role: “He’s getting more minutes. Obviously the reserve game was the first time we were able to push him over a period of time. I think his effectiveness probably went down after the 60-minute mark or so. I think he ended up playing about 75-73. It’s definitely coming around for Sammy. We have Nate (Jaqua), we have Sammy, (Pat) Noonan has played some minutes. Those are some different options we have that can play up front. The rest of the year you might even see (Lamar) Neagle go up top once in a while.”

And here’s the transcript of my Wednesday interview with Ochoa, including some stuff that didn’t get into the story.

On getting 75 minutes in the Monday reserve game … and scoring a goal) I felt good. It felt good to get a chance to play and play more than 25 minutes and get the victory here at home and get it going.

On his current fitness) I think I could have gone for more time, but Ezra decides and decided to take me out. But I feel good. I’m feeling good at practice and those 75 minutes I played, and getting ready for whatever time Sigi gives me.
