Kasey Keller watches as ex-Sounder for 1st time

Former Sounders goalkeeper Kasey Keller — there’s a phase that takes some getting used to — was at Starfire Sports Complex this morning, his first time watching his old team train.

He met with media for a few minutes afterward, and here are some highlights:

Q: What was it like out here today?
“It was cool. It was nice. It was nice having Joe (Roth) and Drew (Carey) and getting to know some of the faces. I know it’s a little bit early and you don’t know who’s going to be around when it all shakes up at

Keller’s retirement season best since … Secretariat?

All evidence indicates it’s not easy for professional athletes to retire gracefully and somewhere near the top of their game.

Griffey sure didn’t do it. Nor Ali. Nor Unitas. Nor Mays. And let’s not even get started on Brett Favre.

Kasey Keller seems to have done it — maybe better than anyone since Secretariat. (Or, OK, maybe Barry Sanders.) The goalkeeper from Olympia picked a season and stuck with it. And now that it’s over, the postseason honors are piling up: MLS Best XI, MLS goalkeeper of the year, and today: save of the year.

And like Secretariat — who is remembered for that amazing Belmont stretch run, even though it wasn’t his final race — this award-winning goal sequence will be the way most Sounders fans remember Keller, even though it wasn’t his final game.

Here’s the club release on the latest honor:

Seattle Sounders FC goalkeeper Kasey Keller was awarded the 2011 MLS Save of the Year for his four-save flurry in a 10-second span against the San Jose Earthquakes on October 15.

Keller offers advice to the Sounders’ next keeper

Sounders outgoing goalkeeper Kasey Keller had a wide-ranging press conference today, the day he was named to the MLS Best XI team.

He was asked what advice he would give to whatever goalkeeper tries to follow him next season.

“I think it totally depends on who comes in, and who the club signs and where that goes,” Keller said. “I think if it’s somebody with a lot of experience, then it won’t be as big of an issue. If it’s somebody who’s kind of young, and up and coming, and trying to make a name for himself, I’ll just tell

Sounders doomed selves in 88th minute of opener

As a practical matter, the Sounders season didn’t end tonight. It ended in the 88th minute of a miserable game Saturday at Real Salt Lake. For 87 minutes things had been bad enough, and taking a two-goal deficit into Seattle tonight would have been challenging enough.

But then in the 88th minute, Ned Grabavoy beat the Seattle defense to a rebound and knocked it into the net. The scoreboard clicked to 3-0. The goal that eventually would end the Sounders season was scored. And goalkeeper Kasey Keller pitched himself a fit.

“There was a big reason for that,” Keller said tonight from the final losing locker room of his playing career. “Two-nil is such a tenuous scoreline in soccer. It gives you that little bit false sense of security. … So that’s why that third one was a monster, and it ended up being just that. Read more »

Keller understands his career could end Wednesday

The Sounders had their big farewell to Kasey Keller during the regular season so that the club could concentrate on the matters at hand during the playoffs.

However, Keller admits that he is mentally counting down his moment, and that Wednesday could be the final day of his playing career.

“There’s no question that just training today I thought this could be my second-to-last training session,” he said. “Of course that’s there. That’s part of it. And I’m going to do everything I can on Wednesday to make sure that it wasn’t.”

And if it is?

“Not a problem. That’s the way it works out, then that’s the way it Read more »

Keller surprised toughness/effort missing in opener

The Sounders were terrible at connecting passes on Saturday, and they didn’t put a single shot on goal. But those aren’t the kinds of things that seemed particularly frustrating to goalkeeper Kasey Keller.

The Sounders had said all of last week that they hadn’t been tough enough in previous playoff series, and that that would change in Utah. It didn’t.

“No, it wasn’t there Saturday,” Keller said. “There are a whole lot of factors involved, and we could talk here for a long long time. But we didn’t come in for the fight. You thought maybe the first 10-15

Lots of quotes from and about Kasey Keller … even though his “achievements speak for themselves”

The blog post below shows images of goalkeeper Kasey Keller through the years. It appears in advance of a story that will run in our Wednesday paper and The News Tribune website on Keller, whose amazing playing career took him around the world, yet began in Thurston County and will end sometime next month just up I-5 as a Seattle Sounder.

While interviewing, I got far more quotes from and about Keller than I could fit into the story. So I’ll share some of those here now:

“Kasey Keller is one of the most accomplished players in U.S.
