Evans should be ready, Gspurning closer

The Sounders trained today at Starfire. The club usually likes to train at CenturyLink Field a couple of days before home games, but coach Sigi Schmid decided against that in advance of the Wednesday home game against Columbus.

“We didn’t go to CenturyLink today because we trained Friday on turf and we played the game Saturday on turf,” he explained. “So we didn’t want to go three days in a way on turf. We wanted to stay off turf, so that was the reason for it. … Normally we’ll always train at CenturyLink two days before the game.”

Ianni out with bulging disc in back

The Sounders revealed today that defender Patrick Ianni is suffering from a bulging disc in his back. Initial treatment will be rest. He is out for this weekend’s game at Vancouver, but otherwise there is no prognosis of how long he might be out.

“He’s got something with his disc that we’ve got to let calm down,” coach Sigi Schmid said after training today. “And then as he calms down with that, it’s just a matter of what he can do: Can he tolerate this type of thing.”

Defender Leo Gonzalez also was pulled out of practice today with “a little bit of a Read more »

Fernandez ready to return, but role undecided

Sounders midfielder Alvaro Fernandez has recovered from his quad stran, however coach Sigi Schmid said it hasn’t yet been decided if he’ll start or come off the bench tomorrow night against Real Salt Lake

Fernandez: I feel good. I’m ready to good. That’s really a technical decision and it will be made at gametime.

Schmid: Yeah, I think Flaco’s ready. The only question for us is whether we start him or whether we bring him off the bench. Because the other concern you have as a coach now is as you put together your starting lineup, Flaco I think is

Goalkeeper Josh Ford placed on disabled list

As if there weren’t enough goalkeeper news from the Sounders today, now this just in from the club:

Seattle Sounders FC announced today that goalkeeper Josh Ford has been placed on the disabled list due to a right knee stress fracture.

As a result, Ford, 24, will miss the next six matches. He will be eligible to return to MLS play on June 16 at Montreal.

Seattle hosts the Philadelphia Union on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. PT on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field.

Gspurning limited again, but expected OK for Fire

The Sounders are off the practice pitch for another day. No big news, although we did get some time with Sammy Ochoa, who scored a pair of goals Monday in the 4-3 Reserve League win at Chivas USA. I’ll have more on that and more from coach Sigi Schmid later.

Otherwise, I guess the top news again was participation. Fernandez, Gspurning, and Ianni were limited. Schmid repeated that the Gspurning thing could be more illness than injury, but that he is expected to be available Saturday at Chicago.

Sounders buy out forward O’Brian White’s contract

Sounders FC has bought out the contract of foward O’Brian White, largely along the lines of the arrangement we tweeted about last week.

Here is the word from the club website,

Seattle Sounders FC has bought out the contract of forward O’Brian White, the club announced today.

As a result, Sounders FC will fulfill the financial obligations of White’s contract but he will no longer occupy a roster spot or count against the club’s salary budget. White will remain in Seattle to continue to rehab from blood clot surgery with the club.

“Unfortunately, because of his medical situation, we have reached an agreement to buy out O’Brian White’s contract,” said Owner and General Manager Adrian Hanauer. “We will fully support O’Brian and will continue to help him rehabilitate with the hope he can resume his playing career.”

White, 26, joined Sounders FC in November 2010 following a trade with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. White scored two goals with two assists in seven starts before undergoing blood clot surgery in April 2011.

White played his first two MLS seasons for Toronto FC after winning the 2008 MAC Hermann Trophy and Soccer America Player of the Year as a junior at the University of Connecticut.

Rosales out, Johnasson iffy for Houston tomorrow

We had known for a couple of days that midfielder/DP/captain Mauro Rosales would miss the Sounders game tomorrow against Houston due to a knee injury. However, coach Sigi Schmid also said today that defender Adam Johansson is questionable with a hamstring issue.

“We wanted to see how he reacted today, so we wanted to keep him off the field,” Schmid said. “It’s going to be a gametime decision with him. There is the possibility he might not go, but we just wanted to really careful because it’s not anything extreme right now. We want to make sure it doesn’t become something worse.”

When asked for an overview feeling going into the game, Schmid mentioned Rosales first thing: Read more »

Rosales out for Friday/beyond with knee sprain

Sounders coach Sigi Schmid confirmed today that midfielder and captain Mauro Rosales will miss the Friday match against Houston with a sprained right knee.

“Mauro will be out for this weekend for sure,” Schmid said. “He’s got a knee sprain — not the same as last year. We’ve just got to see how he responds. So, it could be a couple of weeks, it could be a little more. We’ll have to see how it goes the next few days.”

Schmid said Roger Levesque, Christian Sivebaek or Marc Burch were candidates to take his spot in the lineup.
