Reflections on Roger Levesque’s farewell

Roger Levesque checks in for his final game as a Seattle Sounder.

Somehow, Roger Levesque managed to do a pretty good job of upstaging Chelsea FC this week — including last night when he came on in the 66th minute of Seattle’s 4-2 loss to the European champion, his final appearance before retiring.

Some post-game reaction from Levesque and other Sounders:

LEVESQUE:
It brought me right back to the first day in 2009, that first game walking out onto the field, seeing the stadium full, hearing the chatter, and then the first Seattle Sounders chant, it always gets me every single time, and I think it will continue to do so forever. It was just an amazing experience. The game was great. … It was an awesome night.

On if he had any second thoughts about retirement) Right about the time that blocked Andy Rose’s header from going in—I was a little bit too old to get out of the way, so I thought it was maybe the right time to hang ‘em up.

More on the night) It was just exciting being out there. I was just happy to run around. I always try to get in the mix and make something happen.

On getting the captain’s armband from Fredy Montero) That was Fredy being the person that he’s grown into, just a great man, a great soul. I was just excited to run out there, hear the fans.

Another overview of the evening) It really was a great way to go out. When you come to the end of something, I find myself thinking back and thinking of the special moments, and this is one that is going to stay with me forever.

Coach SIGI SCHMID
On the timing of his Levesque substitution)
I didn’t want to kill the game, but I did want to make sure we subbed Roger in on his own and not as a group of three or four, so Read more »

Chelsea manager says European perception of MLS improving; impressed by facilities around Seattle

Leading to their friendly tomorrow against the Sounders, Chelsea had a press conference today at the Four Seasons in downtown Seattle. Some highlights:

Manager ROBERTO DI MATTEO
*“The perception in Europe of Major League Soccer is that it is improving. The fact that they are signing younger players and helping them grow from an earlier age is showing by the increased quality on the field.”

* “I watch MLS more because the quality of play is improving. The attention to the league and matches is brought by the big-name players but there is plenty of talent outside of those bigger names.”

Levesque: “Maybe a few tears” tomorrow

Seattle’s friendly tomorrow against Chelsea also will mark the end of Roger Levesque‘s playing career, as he will retire afterward and head off to business school.

Levesque — one of the most popular of USL and MLS Sounders — was asked if he expects to be emotional. And he gave an answer that shows why he’s one of the most popular of USL and MLS Sounders:

“I don’t know,” he said. “Potentially. I’ve held it together pretty well until this point.

“I was actually just thinking about it the other day: The last time I cried – this is actually pretty funny – we were on a team flight I think back from New England. It wasn’t that long ago. I watched “We Bought a Zoo.” And something about the movie really struck a chord. I don’t know. Jhon Kennedy (Hurtado) is sitting next to me, and I’m tearing up, and I’m like “Oh, … this is embarrassing.” The potential is there. We’ll see. I probably Read more »

Sounders don’t want another 7-goal beatdown

The Sounders’ friendly turned ugly last season as Manchester United came in and skinned the MLS club, 7-0, with six of those goals coming in the second half when Seattle let its reserves experience playing against one of the world’s great clubs.

Sounders coach Sigi Schmid and general manager Adrian Hanauer indicated the obvious hope for a more competitive match against Chelsea tomorrow.

Schmid: “Obviously, we want to do well. Last year was a strange one for us and it came in the middle of a big stretch of games. What’s nice is we don’t have a game on
