Sounders officially announce Montero loan, adding he also signed multi-year extension with Seattle


The expected news was made official today: that Sounders career-goals leader Fredy Montero has been loaned to Millonarios FC of Colombia. But it came with the unexpected twist that Montero also has signed a multi-year extension with the Sounders.

Here’s the news release from the club:

Seattle Sounders FC forward Fredy Montero has been loaned to Millonarios FC of the Colombian first division for the 2013 season, the club announced today. Seattle also signed Montero to a new multi-year contract extension prior to the loan.

Montero, 25, is Seattle’s all-time leading scorer with 47 goals in league play – the third-most goals in MLS since 2009. Overall, Montero has scored 60 goals with 43 assists across all competitions to lead the team. He has recorded 23 game-winning goals and 12 game-winning assists in all competitions.

Montero named player of U.S. Open Cup 2011

Sounders FC forward Fredy Montero was selected today as player of the tournament for the 2011 U.S. Open Cup.

Montero was voted the honor over three other finalists, including teammate Osvaldo Alonso. And the Sounders, of course, won the tournament for the third straight season.

Montero greeted the news with a Tweet reading: Thanks God ! I won’t do that with out you ….. “Player of the tournament”

Montero has bright red reminder of Cup final

Now I know exactly where Josh Wicks stomped on Fredy Montero.

And I mean exactly.

I couldn’t really tell from the TV coverage: Stomach? Leg? Couldn’t really tell.

So, with the Sounders back at Starfire today, I asked Montero (with teammate Taylor Graham serving as interpreter).

Montero answered by rolling up the right leg of his practice shorts. The exact spot remained clearly marked by two blood-red scrapes along his thigh — one about 4-5 inches long, the other 2-3 inches — both looking as bright as if they had been applied by a crimson felt marker.
