Dempsey out of Open Cup through at least 2017

The U.S. Open Cup Adjudication and Discipline Panel has suspended Seattle Sounders FC forward Clint Dempsey a total of six U.S. Open Cup matches or the next two years of U.S. Open Cup competition, whichever is greater. The suspension is due to his actions during the U.S. Open Cup match between Seattle Sounders FC and Portland Timbers on June 16, 2015.

In addition, Dempsey has been fined an undisclosed amount.

MLS suspends Dempsey three games; ‘We felt significant suspension appropriate’

Seattle Sounders FC forward Clint Dempsey has been suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for his conduct toward a match official during a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match on Tuesday, July 16.

While the incident took place outside MLS league play, alleged actions by an MLS player against a referee during any club competition is adjudicated and disciplined by the professional league. In this case, MLS had jurisdiction to review the incident and levy sanctions per Policy 202(1)(H)-2 in the U.S. Soccer Policy Manual.

Dempsey will serve his suspension during the next three Sounders matches and he is precluded from participating in any soccer competition until the suspension has expired.

Alonso suspended one game for violent conduct

The MLS Disciplinary Committee has suspended D.C. United forward Chris Rolfe one game and fined the player an undisclosed amount for violent conduct that endangered the safety of an opponent in the 62nd minute of United’s match against the Philadelphia Union on May 30, 2015.

In addition, Seattle Sounders FC midfielder Osvaldo Alonso has been suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount for violent conduct that endangered the safety of an opponent in the 83rd minute of Seattle’s match against the New York Red Bulls on May 31, 2015

Sounders not surprised by Marshall suspension; Scott likely to fill in vs. Timbers

Coach Sigi Schmid spoke a bit this morning about the MLS Disciplinary Committee’s one-game suspension of central defender Chad Marshall for endangering an opponent. The suspension will keep the 2014 MLS defender of the year out of the Sunday match with Portland.

We knew it was going to get looked at. They usually let you know when they’re going to look at those kinds of things. We felt that it might be a possibility. I looked at it again. For sure he was a little high, but if you look at it the ball sort of jumped up there too – his foot wasn’t really far off the ball. … It wasn’t a surprise once we heard they were going to look into it. MLS suspends Chad Marshall for Timbers game

Here’s an update from the club:

The MLS Disciplinary Committee has suspended Seattle Sounders FC defender Chad Marshall one game and fined the player an undisclosed amount for serious foul play that endangered the safety of an opponent in the 13th minute of Seattle’s match against Colorado Rapids on April 18, 2015.

Marshall will miss Sunday’s match against the Portland Timbers and is set to return next Sunday, May 3 in a road match against New York City FC. He has started five of Seattle’s six games this season after winning 2014 MLS Defender of the Year in his first season with Seattle.

Sounders FC hosts Portland in a nationally televised matchup Sunday on FOX Sports 1. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. PT on the XBOX Pitch at CenturyLink Field.

Three-game suspension ends Marc Burch’s season

Major League Soccer today announced discipline for Seattle Sounders FC defender Marc Burch.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber has suspended Burch for three games and fined him an undisclosed amount for using unacceptable and offensive language towards an opponent in the 75th minute of the game against Real Salt Lake on Thursday, Nov. 8th.

Commissioner Garber also mandated that Burch attend diversity and sensitivity training. This is in addition to the training that all MLS clubs attend at the beginning of each season.

Burch will serve the suspension during the next three Seattle Sounders FC matches which include the two 2012 Conference Finals games against the LA Galaxy. Should Seattle advance to MLS Cup 2012, Burch will serve the final game of his suspension during that match. If his team does not advance to MLS Cup 2012, he will be suspended for the first game of the 2013 season.

Schmid suspended and fined for ref comments

Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid was suspended and filed by the league today for his criticisms of referee Ricardo Salazar after the club’s scoreless draw with Real Salt Lake on Wednesday.

Here is the release from the league:

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber today suspended Seattle Sounders FC Coach Sigi Schmid for one game and fined him $2,000 for inappropriate public comments about the officials during and after his team’s game against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 17.

“Sigi Schmid’s comments earlier this week about the officiating were unacceptable,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said. “MLS requires that its players, coaches, and club leadership maintain proper respect for the officials at all times.”

The suspension will be served Sunday when FC Dallas comes to CenturyLink Field. Assistant coach Brian Schmetzer will assume Schmid’s coaching duties.

Zach Scott suspended one game for dangerous play

The MLS Disciplinary Committee has suspended Seattle Sounders FC defender Zach Scott one game and fined him an undisclosed amount for endangering the safety of FC Dallas midfielder Fabian Castillo in the 75th minute of the May 9 game.

Scott will serve his suspension this Saturday when Sounders FC host Real Salt Lake at 7 p.m. PT.
