Saturday comes: Quakes-Sounders open stadium

Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., will host its first game tonight: Sounders at San Jose Earthquakes.
The teams will share the spotlight with the stadium tonight as the Sounders and Quakes meet in an MLS Western Conference match that also will also serve as the first sporting event at Levi’s Stadium, the soon-to-be new home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers.

Here’s our preview story, and below few basics:

HEAD TO HEAD:
San Jose leads the MLS series 7-6-1 overall and 4-1-1 at home. The Sounders won the May 17 meeting in Seattle. The clubs will meet again Aug. 8 in Seattle.
NOTES: This is the first sporting event held at Levi’s Stadium, which will be the new home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. A crowd of around 47,000 is expected. … The Quakes are 4-4-3 at home, while the Sounders are 5-2-2 on the road. … Seattle leads the Western Conference but is coming off a 3-0 loss to Los Angeles on Monday. San Jose is last in the West, but is coming off a 5-1 win over Chicago last week. … Clint Dempsey leads Seattle with nine goals, while Obafemi Martins and Gonzalo Pineda shares the club lead with six assists. For the Quakes, Chris Wondolowski leads with seven goals, and Shea Salinas with five assists. … San Jose on Friday introduced attacking midfielder Matias Perez Garcia at the third designated player in club history …Seattle coach Sigi Schmid again is looking for his 200th MLS career win. … Seattle midfielder Brad Evans and left back Leo Gonzalez are expected to be available. However, central defender Chad Marshall (back) and midfielder Lamar Neagle (ankle) are out. The Sounders announced that Marshall also will be a scratch from the MLS All-Star Game next week. … San Jose’s Steven Lenhart and Jordan Stewart are one caution from yellow-card suspension. Lenhart is questionable with knee inflammation. … The referee is Ismail Elfath.
QUOTABLE: “Normally they have, what, 12 or 13 thousand at a game? If there’s double that, you’re going to get pumped up about that. But at the end of the day it’s about us, it’s coming off a loss, it’s not worrying about the opening of a new stadium.” – Evans the first game at Levi’s Stadium.
NEXT: Rookie Sean Okoli will play in the MLS Homegrown game on Monday, as part of the All-Star festivities in Portland; and on Wednesday Dempsy, Martins, DeAndre Yedlin and Osvaldo Alonso will be part of the actual All-Star Game. Meanwhile, the Sounders return to league play Aug. 10, when the Houston Dynamo visits CenturyLink Field.
