Sounders fan Xander Bailey took part in a training session with the Sounders today, with the help of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Bailey, who is from the Pennsylvania and West Virginia area, said he adopted the Sounders as his favorite club some seasons ago, partly because of their rave and blue colors.
“I’m very grateful for them having me here,” he said. “(I’m excited) to be here and have an opportunity to play with players like this, especially Dempsey and Yedlin, players that were on the national team. It’s been good. … It’s pretty crazy. The level of play is way up there. Really good time up there. … Very exciting. … A wild experience.”
He also said his friends are excited for him, and maybe “a little jealous.”
The Sounders also seemed to enjoy the visit, too.
This from Clint Dempsey: He’s a good player. He’s skillful. I thought he came in and did well. It was fun for him to come out, and for us to interact with him. We look forward to tomorrow, he’s going to be at the game as well. So anytime you can be a part of something like Make-A-Wish, it’s pretty special.
This from coach Sigi Schmid: It was good. We had him on the orange team, so he had the benefit of being able to play with Oba and Clint. But he was the first pass in the sequence that led to Oba’s first goal in that game, and I thought that was really solid. He was simple when he needed to be – that was important. Some guys always get abused in the 5v2 the first time when they’re new guys because they don’t realize maybe how fast the ball moves. But after that I thought he adjusted. … (He’s) either attacking midfielder or winger, so we’ll see.
