Here was what Sounders coach Sigi Schmid had to say today about his timetable U.S. national team players Clint Dempsey and DeAndre Yedlin’s return to MLS play.
“We’ve talked to them and we’ll continue to talk,” he said. “They need some time off, so we’re going to give them a little bit of time off. Each of their timetables will probably be a little bit different: unique to them and to their situation. Possibility we might have one – maybe both – for this weekend, but less likely that that’s going to happen, then we’ll see about next week.”
Schmid was asked if they’ll certainly be back in time for the Sounders’ MLS match against Portland on July 13.
“Yeah, for the Timbers MLS match for sure,” he said. “For sure both will be back for that, and we’re working out the time as to when to give them the break. Like I said before, it’s a physically demanding tournament, but it’s also mentally a very demanding situation and you need a break. And I think when people push people back too early it’s not good. San Jose last night brought Bernardez off the bench, but (Hondruas) got eliminated from group play like over a week ago, so he’s had some time off. And I think that’s the best way to deal with it.”
