The Sounders concluded their 2014 preseason 6-0-3 Saturday with a 2-2 draw with D.C. United in the Carolina Challenge Cup.
Potentially more importantly, DeAndre Yedlin left the pitch tonight after a hard tackle. Chad Marshall played just 60 minutes. Leo Gonzales and Djimi Traore were assigned to the morning training game, rather than the Carolina Challenge Cup match.
Here’s coach Sigi Schmid’s take on all of it:
On Yedlin: It’s the same ankle – the reason that we held him out last Saturday – so he rolled it, but he thinks he’ll be OK. It’s just a matter of how he does (and making) sure he doesn’t swell up on the plane.’’
On Marshall: We just took him out a little bit precaution because he’s been a little bit tight and he’s played enough minutes and he’s gone 90 for us twice already, so I told him even before the game, ‘I only want you to go 60 today, and we’ll let Zach finish up for you.
On Gonzalez and Traore: Leo was part of the morning game so we could get him a good 60 minutes this morning. He’s still making his way back from his injury. His sharpness is still getting there. His fitness is the thing that has to come back. So both him and Djimi Traore played in the game this morning for them to get 60 good minutes and help build their fitness.
On if Dylan Remick’s development allows Schmid not to rush Gonzalez: I think we have alternatives in different places. Even when DeAndre went down at the end you could Rose into midfield and you shove Rose into the back. I think we have alternatives. I thought Leo played well this morning, and I think Remick is growing definitely with each game.
